PEACE LETTER WAS READ TO 16,000
ACTIVISTS
The historical document below was written jointly by six Israelis and Palestinian
distinguished figures, at the World Social Forum at Porto Alegre, Brazil,
where they“ve participated in a several day“s seminar promoted by a local Arab-Jewish
group called "Dialogues for Peace".
It was read in Portuguese at the last day of the International
meeting, for a crowded public of about 16,000 social activists, by the
Mayor of Porto Alegre City, Mr. Joćo Verle.
Galia Golan, founding member of the israeli movement PEACE
NOW and the ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN
COALITION FOR PEACE, followed him, reading this original version.
During the speech, with the background sound of John Lennon“s melody "Imagine",
all the personalities at the stage stood, hand in hand, followed by thousands
at the public, finally singing alltogether its lyrics.
It was one of the most breath-taking moments at the 3rd World Social Forum, and,
surely a promising sign for a better future to the suffering people at Israel
and Palestine.
LETTER FROM PORTO ALEGRE
We, Israeli and Palestinian peace activists, are determined to pursue:
peace, justice, and sovereignty for our peoples, an end to the
Israeli occupation of the lands occupied in 1967,
the creation of an independent Palestinian state side by side with
Israel along the lines of 4 June 1967 with Jerusalem as an open city, the
capital of each of the two states,
an agreed just and fair solution for the Palestinian refugee
problem in accordance with UN resolution 194.
We call upon the international community and the United Nations in
particular, urgently to intervene in the interests of:
putting an end to this tragic situation and ending violence on both sides,
proceeding immediately with peaceful negotiations to bring about a
just and lasting peace.
